Old Garages, Odd Sizes
Carrboro has a lot of older houses on small lots, and plenty of the garages are detached, single car or built well before today's standard sizes.
That matters when a door needs replacing.
An older opening may be a few inches off a standard size, or have very little headroom. Doors can be made to fit, but it may mean special track or a custom size. A good installer measures carefully before quoting. See garage door replacement.
Detached Garages and Workshops
Plenty of Carrboro garages are used as studios, workshops or storage rather than for a car. A door that's opened only now and then can still fail. Springs rust from sitting, and seals dry out.
If your garage is a workspace, an insulated door can make it usable through more of the summer. More on that in insulated garage doors.
Newer Homes North of Town
The newer subdivisions to the north mostly have attached two car garages with builder grade steel doors and chain drive openers. Common calls there are broken springs, noisy doors and sensors knocked out of line.
A door that opens but won't close is almost always the sensors. Try the checks on the door won't close page before you call. It may be a free fix.
Sticking Doors in Old Openings
In older garages, the frame itself can shift over the years as the building settles. A door that used to run fine starts rubbing at one side or binding near the top.
Sometimes the fix is adjusting the track. Sometimes the jamb or header needs repair first. Either way, don't crank up the opener's force to push through it.
