Tree Removal: What It Costs, How We Do It, and When You Actually Need It

Most trees we take down didn't fail overnight. A willow oak drops dead limbs for three summers. A loblolly pine starts leaking pitch from tiny holes in the bark.

Then a July thunderstorm rolls through, and the question changes from "should we?" to "how fast can you get here?"

Signs a Tree Needs to Come Down

• Mushrooms or shelf fungus growing at the base or on the roots
• A new lean, especially with cracked or lifted soil on the opposite side
• Dead wood covering more than half the canopy
• Pitch tubes or fine sawdust on pine bark, a common sign of pine beetles
• Deep vertical cracks or a hollow trunk
• Limbs growing into service lines or hanging over your roof

One sign alone doesn't always mean removal. Two or three together usually do. If you're on the fence, we'll look at the tree and tell you honestly whether pruning will buy it more years.

What Tree Removal Costs

Height drives most of the price. Lawn Love's 2026 cost guide puts the national average at $850 per tree, with most homeowners paying between $385 and $1,070. Here's their breakdown by size:

Our jobs often land toward the upper rows of that table for a simple reason: trees here grow big. Tulip poplars and loblolly pines regularly pass 80 feet, and many older neighborhoods have mature oaks standing a few yards from the house.

Access matters as much as size. When we can't safely lower a tree in sections, we bring in a crane. Crane rates in the Durham area run roughly $400 to $700 an hour with an operator, and most crane jobs carry a half day minimum. We'll tell you before we quote if your tree needs one.

How We Take a Tree Down

Every removal starts with a rigging plan. Our climbers work on Petzl harnesses and ropes, cut the canopy into manageable pieces, and lower each one on friction devices so nothing free falls onto your roof, fence, or garden beds.

On the ground, the crew bucks the wood with Stihl and Husqvarna saws and feeds brush through a Vermeer or Bandit chipper right in your driveway.

You choose what stays. Some customers want the chips for mulch. Others want split logs for the fire pit. Most want everything gone.

Stump grinding is a separate line on your quote. Before we grind, we contact NC 811 to have buried gas, water, and cable lines marked.

Permits, HOAs, and Power Lines

In most cases, homeowners with a single family lot can remove a tree on their own property without a city permit. Different rules can apply to trees in stream buffers, local historic districts, or land under development review, so check with Durham City-County Planning if any of those describe your property.

HOA rules catch people off guard more often than city rules do. Read your covenants first.

A tree touching a power line is a different job entirely. Don't touch it, and don't let anyone without line clearance training near it. Call Duke Energy. Scheduling a planned power shutoff can take a week or two, while a tree down on a live line during a storm usually gets a same day response.

Before You Hire Anyone (Including Us)

Ask for a certificate of liability insurance and proof of workers' compensation, sent directly from the insurer. If a climber gets hurt on your property and the company carries no coverage, that claim can land on your homeowner's policy.
